Disc Jockey Day- January 20th 1

Everyone knows a DJ; thousands claim that they are one. Disc Jockey Day is all about celebrating the hard working entertainers that have brought energy to dance floors across the globe. Respect needs to be paid to Disc Jockeys of all levels from velvet suited wedding crooners to international superstars – if you’ve made people dance by playing back to back music, today is the day to hail your talents. Superstar DJ’ing was born out of the popularity of the Ibiza dance scene and now dance music and DJs are global and the technology has moved way beyond two turntables and a microphone.

The first DJ was an attempt on the airwaves made by the sixteen-year-old Ray Newby in 1909. He was a student at Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless who studied under the supervision of Charles “Doc” Herrold. The experiment which started in the Garden City Bank Building in that college was soon being reproduced by the radio broadcasters. It took nearly 25 years to term the word disc jockey. Walter Winchell coined the name. Over the years, many different forms of disc jockeying developed, from radio djs to club dj's, to Hip-hop DJs, Mobile DJ, and more.

The history, origin, and the founder of the National Disc Jockey Day (USA) are unknown. There is no mention about the year from when this celebration started. However, this celebrattion started as a remembrance of the death of Albert James Freed also nicknamed Moondog, an influential disc jockey during the 1950s. James Freed is also the person who is credited for the creation of the terminoligy “rock ‘n’ roll.”

A DJ is a person who perfectly mixes different forms of pre-existing recorded music as it is playing. A DJ will usually perform before a live audience in a nightclub or dance club. He/she may even broadcast the music through radio.

It’s important to remember the definition of a Disc Jockey, these days more coined as deejays, a person who selects and plays recorded music for an audience; therefore almost anyone can be a DJ so get out there and play some music!
